Jacob's Sony WH 1000XM4 Headphones

Jacob’s Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones were a black pair of wireless noise-canceling over-ear headphones given to him by Julia Weston and Nathan Weston on Christmas Day 2024. They accompanied his MacBook Pro as equipment for his music and remained in his bedroom at the Weston home.

Design and Components

The WH-1000XM4 used a closed, circumaural design with forty-millimeter drivers, active noise cancellation, Ambient Sound, and touch controls. The headphones supported Bluetooth 5.0 with SBC, AAC, and LDAC audio, but also included a detachable 1.2-meter cable with a 3.5mm stereo plug. They could operate passively through the cable if the battery was depleted.

Sony rated the battery for up to thirty hours of continuous playback with noise cancellation on or thirty-eight hours with it off. A full charge took approximately three hours through USB-C. The original package included the charging cable, audio cable, and zippered carrying case.

Acquisition and Ownership

Julia and Nathan gave Jacob the headphones during his first Christmas in their home, together with the MacBook Pro. Nathan described the paired gifts as being “for your music.” The headphones gave Jacob a private listening and practice setup that did not require him to play the room’s piano speakers aloud.

Documented Use

Jacob connected the headphones to his Kawai CA701 with the included audio cable. The wired connection avoided Bluetooth latency while he practiced and allowed him to use the piano late at night without sending its sound through the house. He used Bluetooth with his iPhone and MacBook Pro for recorded music and general listening.

The headphones’ active noise cancellation also gave Jacob a larger, more isolating option when household or environmental sound became difficult to tolerate. His AirPods Pro remained the portable pair he carried during the day; the Sony headphones primarily stayed with the piano and computer in his room.

Care and Storage

Jacob kept the headphones in their carrying case on the music shelf or placed them on a stand beside the CA701. He stored the detachable piano cable with them and charged them by USB-C at the desk.
